Marbleing
Marbleing is the finishing of a surface in close imitation of real marble. As a technique it dates back to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, and was used as a cheaper alternative to the genuine material. As this art form spread throughout Europe in the middle ages it became used as a means to decorate a range of surfaces where due to lack of strength and construction constraints genuine marble could not be used.

As this technique spread so did the variations from imitating real marble to the more impressionistic technique that merely suggested the rich colors and varied patterning of marble, the "fantasy" effect.
